Keep Your Home and Business Secure This Summer

May 5, 2025 Steve Sherbourne

When the sun comes out, it’s easy to let your guard down but unfortunately, burglars don’t take a summer holiday. Longer daylight hours, open windows, and time away from home or work can all make properties more vulnerable during the warmer months.

Whether you’re running a business or relaxing at home, a few simple checks and changes can make all the difference. Here’s how to keep your property safe this summer.

1. Prepare for Time Away

Holidays and days out can leave properties vulnerable but there are simple things you can do to reduce the risk:

At home:

  • Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property and collect post or deliveries.

  • Set timers for lights or use smart plugs to give the impression someone’s in.

  • Avoid sharing real-time updates about being away on social media.

  • Make sure bins aren’t left out for days—they’re an easy clue that nobody’s home.

At work:

  • Clearly assign responsibility for locking up if key staff are on holiday.

  • Keep a checklist near exits as a prompt for staff to check windows, back doors, alarms, and shutters.

  • Consider temporarily adjusting alarm settings or surveillance if working hours or routines change during the summer period.

2.Double Down on Window and Door Security

Weak or damaged entry points make a property an easy target.

  • Inspect frames, locks, hinges and seals: look for rust, warping, or stiffness.

  • Upgrade old locks to meet modern security standards especially on older buildings.

  • Install restrictors on windows that need to stay open for airflow, these allow ventilation without creating a security risk.

  • Consider fitting additional door bolts or sash jammers for added strength on vulnerable doors.

3. Use Outdoor Lighting to Deter Intruders

Well-lit properties are less appealing to burglars. Motion-sensor lighting at all access points especially hidden spots like side alleys or rear doors can be a cost-effective way to scare off opportunists.

4. Don’t Forget Outbuildings and Garden Access

Sheds, garages and garden offices often hold valuable tools, bikes, or equipment and they’re not always locked as securely as the main building.

  • Fit padlocks to shed doors and install security lighting.

  • Lock ladders away, don’t leave them out where they can be used to access upper windows.

  • If you’ve invested in a garden room or studio, treat it like part of your home—secure windows, upgrade locks, and consider an alarm or camera system.

5. Install or Upgrade CCTV and Alarm Systems

Modern security systems are more affordable and flexible than ever. Whether you opt for a full CCTV setup or a few smart cameras connected to your phone, having eyes on your property adds a layer of deterrent—and peace of mind.

For businesses, consider whether your current system still matches your needs. Are the cameras in the right places? Are alarms tested regularly?

6. Keep Up with Maintenance

Security isn’t just about locks; it’s also about reliability. A door that sticks, a window that doesn’t close properly, or a broken hinge could end up being your weak spot.

At Windrush Door & Window Services, we provide repair and maintenance support for homes and businesses across the region. Fixing small issues now can save bigger problems later especially when it comes to keeping your property secure.

This June Windrush installed 39 Pvcu windows to our student accommodation block at Rewley Abbey Court. The work required them to install the windows while residents were in occupation, some with young children. Windrush carried out a full risk and method statement and appraisal to carry out the works in a safe manner with multi-occupation to consider. Full scaffolding and access booms were used with everything being alarmed and fenced off with appropriate signage in place. The Windrush team involved had all the necessary accreditation holding CSCS cards, asbestos awareness trained, CRB checked etc. The windows were as per our requested specification with Windrush being the most competitive out of the competition. The College are very pleased with all aspects of the work carried out and will be using Windrush on our future projects.

Windrush have installed new pvcu patio doors in the residents homes on site. The window installers being friendly and polite and having a nice demeanour and getting on well with the residents. The work was carried out in a professional manor with their work being clean and tidy all with an insurance baked guarantee. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to others.

I would just like to say that I was very impressed by the two young men who came to do the windows yesterday, they were very efficient, had impeccable manners and they cleared up after themselves which was a joy.

Windrush serviced two Velux windows and re-glazed with new sealed units, re-glazed a bedroom window with three sealed units, and re-glazed a conservatory upgrading sealed units to “Low E Argon” gas and thermal bar

During the School holidays the Windrush team carried out window adaption works for the School. Windrush installed remote window winding equipment to our high level windows that have been a health and safety issue with pupils and staff standing on chairs to open. I can recommend Windrush for their professional approach, competitive pricing and ability to accommodate our requirements during a busy time with many other trades on site. They were willing to change their work schedule to accommodate changing circumstances on site.

Windrush recently attended our Academy and replaced damaged window hinges and handles with great success. The Windrush Team who carried the work out were very professional with the work being carried out during normal School hours. The Health and Safety aspect being covered with the adoption of measures from their risk assessment and method statement being carried out.
